D.T Devendra was a school teacher and prolific traveler, historian and writer. His books are very readable and indicate his expanse of knowledge. In this book he suggests the Buddha image originated among the Sinhala Buddhists who did not have the Indian inhibitions of showing the human form. He builds his theory with references from the Mahawansa as well close study of the ancient statues found in Sri Lanka.
