Preface: Come and See (Preface to Impermanence in Plain English) 2022
I AM A NINETY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD MONK. By now, I have come to see life as a dream. Fifty years ago, I wrote a paper for a first-year English class at American University that offered a basic framework for meditation in my tradition, the Theravada school of Buddhism. The paper was called "Come and See." In the oldest set of texts attributable to the Buddha, and in the daily chanting of monks like me, the Pali term ehipassiko means just that; ehi is an invitation to come, and passiko is one who sees. We practice looking inward in ways that give rise to liberating insight. These insights are said to be known individually by those who are wise.
Since that time, I have looked within. I have seen, heard, smelled, tasted, touched, and thought countless sights, sounds, smells, tangibles, and thoughts. All of them are gone. In their place remains peace. I am at home with impermanence. I want to convey this awareness to you in a way that can be understood directly. This book shares the same spirit of "come and see" as that paper fifty years ago, but the focus is different. I wish for you to taste the fruit of meditation firsthand. These pages invite you to join me in the personal experience of impermanence, for it is there that you will find wisdom and freedom.
